One of the first questions I get when planning a family session is, “Where should we go?” And honestly—it’s a great question. The location you choose sets the tone for your entire gallery. It doesn’t just give us a backdrop; it helps tell your story.
The good news? There’s no one “right” answer. The best location is the one that fits your family’s vibe, your comfort level, and how you want these memories to feel years from now.
Let’s walk through some of my favorite options and what makes each one special.
Open Fields + Nature Trails (That Golden, Glowy Look)

If you love that warm, dreamy, golden-hour glow—this is your spot.
Open fields, tall grasses, and nature trails create the kind of light that photographers dream about. Everything feels soft, natural, and a little bit magical. These sessions are perfect for movement—walking, snuggling, kids running wild (in the best way).
Local favorites like Whitetail Woods Regional Park or Lebanon Hills Regional Park offer a mix of trails, open space, and gorgeous light.
Best for:Families who love candid moments, natural movement, and that effortless, sun-soaked feel.
Lakeside + Beachy Vibes (Calm and Classic)

There’s something about water that instantly brings a sense of calm.
Lakeside sessions offer a clean, timeless look with soft reflections and open skies. Kids can dip their toes, sit on a dock, or just explore while we capture those in-between moments.
Beautiful local options include Excelsior Commons for a charming lakeside feel, Lake Nokomis for that classic beachy vibe, and even pockets within Lebanon Hills Regional Park that offer water views mixed with trails.
Best for:Families who want a relaxed, slightly polished look with a peaceful backdrop.
Downtown + Urban Settings (A Little Edge, A Lot of Personality)
If fields aren’t your thing, let’s head downtown.
Urban locations bring texture and variety—brick walls, sidewalks, storefronts, and a more modern feel. Downtown Northfield is a favorite for that charming, small-town vibe without the chaos of a big city.
If you want a bigger city feel, Minneapolis offers incredible variety—especially around Stone Arch Bridge with skyline views, river backdrops, and that iconic mix of nature + architecture.
These sessions feel a little more styled, a little more bold, and full of personality.
Best for:Families who want something different, modern, and a bit more editorial.
Parks + Wooded Areas (Classic and Versatile)

Parks are a go-to for a reason—they offer a little bit of everything.
Think tree-lined paths, open grassy areas, and soft, even lighting. These locations are great for families with little ones because they’re easy to navigate and give us plenty of options without a lot of walking.
Local favorites include Ritter Farm Park for its open fields and charming trails, and Whitetail Woods Regional Park which gives you a mix of woods, prairie, and beautiful natural backdrops all in one spot.
Best for:Families who want a mix of posed and candid images in a simple, natural setting.
Studio Sessions (Simple, Clean, and Timeless)
If you love a clean, distraction-free look—studio is where it’s at.
At my Farmington studio, 8th Street Studio, you’ll find a clean, modern space designed with natural light and simplicity in mind. Think bright whites, soft tones, and a minimal aesthetic that keeps the focus right where it should be—on your connection.
No bugs, no wind, no rescheduling because Minnesota decided to be… Minnesota. Just an easy, relaxed environment where kids can settle in and we can create timeless images without distractions.
Studio sessions are especially perfect for younger kids, babies, or anyone who prefers a more controlled environment.

Best for:Families who love a polished, timeless look and want to keep things easy.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Time of day matters. Outdoor sessions are typically scheduled around golden hour for that soft, flattering light.
Think about your home. Where will these photos live? Choosing a location that matches your home’s style can make a big difference.
Comfort is key. If you’re relaxed, your photos will feel that way too.
So… Which One Should You Choose?

Here’s the truth: you really can’t go wrong.
Whether we’re chasing sunset in a field, wandering downtown streets, or keeping things simple in the studio—the magic always comes from your connection, not just the location.
If you’re unsure, I’ll help you choose based on your family, your style, and the season we’re in. That’s part of the experience.
And if your kids end up running barefoot by the water or piled into your arms laughing, that’s exactly where the good stuff lives.
